Big trouble in Walrus Town!
There are questions here that need answers.
But don't worry, I've honed my best moves to answer you point for point, without mincing words.
A simple and useful section, to navigate without doubts.
Because the walrus cares, a lot!
What is The Walrus | IP-TO-Screen Bureau?
The Walrus | IP-To-Screen Bureau is the first platform of its kind in Italy, a unique space where information on intellectual property from various media (literature, audio, gaming, etc.) is catalogued and structured in a simple and orderly manner.
All conceived with a view to cross-media adaptation, with IPs from all over the world.
A mediation system to efficiently, continuously, and profitably connect those looking for stories to adapt with those who manage the rights.
Whether you're a production company looking to adapt a book, a screenwriter looking for a story to adapt, a podcaster or gamer looking to develop a spin-off IP from another medium, or a publishing house looking for stories to turn into books or new, unknown authors, I'm sure The Walrus is for you.
Who can use The Walrus | IP-TO-Screen Bureau?
The main players to whom The Walrus | IP-To-Screen Bureau's service is dedicated are two:
- Customers , those who wish to enter the database to access information on IP
- IP Providers , those who manage or own audiovisual or secondary adaptation rights of IP and who wish to have information about their stories within The Walrus.
Customers can access the Bureau by subscribing to a monthly subscription structured into different plans.
Although the focus is on clients active in the audiovisual sector, the service is open and certainly interesting for anyone looking for a story to adapt.
To request information, prices, and access methods, fill out the form related to your status.
What databases are available?
The Walrus Bureau, the platform's treasure chest, is structured into six different databases:
- Audio , for content like podcasts and audio dramas.
- Comics , a database specifically for comics.
- Games , dedicated to role-playing, card and board games.
- Literature , from novels to nonfiction, to short stories and reportage.
- Theatre , plays, stand-up, musicals and more.
- Video Games , the whole world of gaming.
There is also a further special database, Wild Orcas , dedicated to IP whose rights are managed directly by the author*, which corresponds to a tag to define the origin of the IP whether unpublished or self-published (self-publishing, literary prizes, editorial studios).
NOTE: In BETA the available databases are Comics, Literature and Wild Orcas.
Does the Bureau also contain native audiovisual IP?
No, The Walrus databases focus on IPs from various mediums that can be adapted into audiovisual formats of any type (feature film, series, documentary, animation, short film).
The decision was made following a reflection on the different "path" that a native audiovisual IP follows in the market, and the difficulty of managing such a vast additional field of stories and possibilities.
But in the future, never say never...
How do subscription plans work?
The platform is currently active in BETA version , so only one subscription plan is available:
- Narwhal BETA , which includes access to all active databases ( Comics, Literature, Wild Orcas ) and services included within the platform ( The Walrus Finest and The Walrus Nose )
The plan is available as a monthly or annual subscription, with automatic renewal and free cancellation at any time. Additionally, choosing the annual subscription includes one free month.
In the future, different plans will be activated, designed to meet every need, with targeted access to specific databases and free credits to use.
What are walruses?
Walrus Nose credits are special monthly credits that, when your plan automatically renews, generate discount codes to access The Walrus Nose service for free.
In the BETA version and in the current plan, walruses are not available, they will be included (two per month) in one of the plans that will be activated in the future.
What is The Walrus Report?
The Walrus Report is the heart of the Bureau, the fact sheet that customers will find in every database.
This sheet, divided into 15 sections and 100 subfields, is composed of information and keywords (approximately 1150) that serve to determine its characteristics from a technical and editorial point of view.
The cards are structured and composed starting from the editorial catalogues made available by the IP Suppliers, and uploaded after their review and approval.
They are designed to return as many important details as quickly and directly as possible, and help create an ecosystem of search filters designed to be tailored to the editorial needs of each client.
What is the Walrus Nose?
The Walrus Nose is an extra service available only within the platform, therefore specific to those who have subscribed and for the IPs present in the Bureau.
This is an in-depth factsheet that customers can request for a fee for individual IPs, written by The Walrus' team, just like a group of external consultants. The IP is read/used, analyzed, and the editorial details (long synopsis, theme, characters, setting, etc.) are recorded on the factsheet, and finally everything is sent via email.
The service is designed for those organizations that don't have a structured team of analysts or readers, or that can't manage additional internal readings, or that simply trust the walrus' instincts.
NOTE: Since IPs in the Bureau come from all over the world and from many different contexts, the service is not active for all IPs.
Are there any extra services besides the databases?
The Walrus offers a series of extra-platform services, that is, services external to the Bureau ecosystem but which can be requested and purchased through the platform.
- The Walrus Echo , the free newsletter open to everyone, based on The Walrus Finest.
- The Walrus Deep Dive , the premium paid newsletter open to anyone, designed for those who want to have the full The Walrus Finest but without subscribing to the Bureau.
- The Walrus Power Pitch , a power pitch deck writing and creation service to highlight the audiovisual potential of IPs.
- The Walrus Studio , a news and editorial coverage service.
How much does it cost for IP providers?
For IP Providers, The Walrus is:
- totally free
- no request for transfer of rights
- no requests for percentages on agreements, options, acquisitions between customers and suppliers
- no exclusivity
The Walrus service is specifically designed for those looking for stories to adapt. The core of the platform is geared toward subscribers who want to find information compiled and organized from materials made available by suppliers.
How are submitted materials (PDFs, scripts, etc.) protected?
The Walrus legal team has prepared a series of documents to protect and inform IP Providers and the sensitive materials they make available (such as full PDFs of IP or other confidential material).
NDA Document
A non-disclosure document that guarantees:
- no uploading of sensitive material to the platform
- no sending of sensitive material to customers
- no unauthorized distribution of the material
- no use of AI training material
Collaboration Agreement
An agreement that outlines the "Terms and Conditions" of the collaboration between The Walrus and the IP Providers, to make them aware of the structure of the platform and how the approved listings will be structured within it.
